Good Hair Vs Bad Hair

           Good Hair Vs. Bad Hair

It’s 2015 and I can’t believe that there is a still a debate on “Good Hair” versus “Bad Hair.” This topic hurts my heart because as women of color we should be embracing each other’s beauty and differences instead of ridiculing one another. A few days go while I was having lunch, I listened to a group of girls around 12 or 13 make fun of one of the other girls in their group because her mom didn’t allow her to relax her hair. One of the young girls flipped her relaxed hair and said, “I’m sorry your mom won’t allow you to have good hair like the rest of us. My mom says “nappy hair” isn’t cute. Maybe you should sneak and perm it.” Listening to these little girls taunt their friend truly broke my heart. It made me question the things that our young girls are being taught about beauty. These girls are learning from a young age to hate themselves and their natural beauty because they watch the older generation of women altering themselves and assimilating into today’s society. There are many women starting from the age of 25 or maybe even younger, who strongly believe that there is a such thing as good and bad hair. Today I am here to address both terms, with the hope that we can remove the words from our vocabulary when we speak about hair.

Good Hair

The idea behind “good hair” isn’t something new. It actually stems all the way back to slavery days.  Originally women of color all had similar grades of hair. It was thick and coiled and probably a bit unmanageable at times.  Over time hair started to change, which was the result of slave owners mixing with slaves. This created a new kind of hair. It was hair that had straighter and silkier features but still coiled.  This hair became what we now view has “good hair.”  This also became a tool that was used to drive a wedge between women of color.

Bad Hair

The thought of using the words bad and hair in the same sentence actually makes my skin cringed just a tad bit.  People consider bad hair to be hair that is coarse and kinkier than what society is used. The term bad hair was something coined in order to manipulate women of color into believing that they needed to chemically alter their hair in order to be accepted in society.

It’s Just Hair

The truth of the matter is that hair is just hair. It’s no such thing as good hair or bad hair. If you want to consider hair good, don’t consider it good based on its texture. Consider it good based on how healthy it is.  No two heads of hair are alike, so don’t sit around wishing that your hair were different. Black hair is beautiful. The things that you can do with it are endless.  Accept and embrace your hair no matter the texture, curl shape or length.

Dry Summer Hair, Hakuna Matata

Frenchie Friday

The summer days are quickly approaching and for us naturals this may be the best or worse season of them all.  Summertime means there is a whole new set of rules for your hair. Don’t let a new set of hair rules ruin your summer. Natural hair can be easily managed in the heat if you follow some essential rules. This means finding new ways to keep your hair moist and finding ways to protect your hair from the beautiful sun. The battle between natural hair and the sun is a war that can be won.

Lets face it, we all look forward to summer especially after the long winters that we have had. But with great weather comes, comes tremendous hair struggles. For me the summer means frequent travels to the beach and pool. Unfortunately, as much as I love the beach and pool, my hair doesn’t feel the same way. The problem with the beach and pool is that the water tends to dry out my hair more so than normal. This problem can be solved with just a few simple steps. It won’t completely stop the drying but it will help a great deal. So here’s a few tips to help with maintain your hair before and after taking a cool dip.

Tips:

1.Prep your hair before you swim:  Prepping your hair before you swim is probably one of the most important steps. To prep your hair you’ll want to first wet your hair before going to the beach or pool. You’re probably like wet my hair before that makes no sense but trust me it does. After you wet your hair, you’ll want use heavy oils that will soak into your hair as barrier of protection. Allow it time to seep into your hair, roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

    2.  Wear a swim cap: I know, I know!!! These things are extremely hideous and they probably don’t go with any swimsuit that you own. Unfortunately, they are the best thing you can wear to protect your hair.

  3. Cleanse your hair: After a long day of being at the beach or pool you definitely want to give your hair some serious TLC when you get home. Most people will head straight for the shampoo bottle, but I will never suggest shampoo unless it’s a clarifying shampoo and it’s always the last result. I suggest using a cleanser. I find cleansers to be much more moisturizing.  After you’ve chosen the best way to cleanse your hair, you want to follow up with your favorite conditioner and leave in.  Then you can style your hair as usual.

Summer hair requires just as much or more care than winter hair. You have to try your best to maintain a strict hair regimen if you want to keep those curls beautiful. Locking in moisture during the warm weather may seem almost impossible but I promise that it can be done.

The first thing you should be doing to keep your hair moist is deep conditioning!!! This should be done weekly. The more you deep condition the better your hair will feel.  I, however, deep condition my hair on a daily basis. I know it sounds like a lot but I'll let you in on my little secret. During my morning showers I co-wash my hair and after I apply Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. If you've never heard of or tried this product you are definitely missing out. After letting this product sit in my hair it feels absolutely amazing and detangling is a breeze. This product can be at your local Walmart or Target for as little as $2.97

Give up the heat ladies!!! I know that it's so annoying when your hair doesn't fully dry or when you're in a rush and you have wet hair hanging in your face. It’s so easy to just grab the blow dryer and dry away but please don’t do it. I know air-drying can be difficult but it's worth it.  Adding heat to your hair in summer weather is ridiculous. All you're doing is causing unnecessary damage to your hair and causing it to further dry out.

Trade in your gel. If you’re like me, wash and go's are just not complete unless you add a hand full of gel for hold. Unfortunately, summertime and gel just aren't that compatible. Try using styling creams or soufflés. I’ve recently become addicted to Pantene’s Defining Curls Styling Custard and Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé. I apply both of those along with my favorite moisturizer and essential oil. They provide excellent hold without leaving my hair dry and crunchy like gel does.

Hot oil treatments are also great for this humid weather. Most people rinse of their hot oil treatment but I like to leave it in. I've found that warming up your essential oils before adding them to your hair as a sealant helps retain more moisture. It will leave your hair feeling soft and shiny.

Frenchie’s Final Thoughts: Don’t let dry hair ruin your summer. Take the extra time to keep your hair moist. So many people allow their hair to ruin their days. You don’t have to have bad hair days; in fact with natural hair every day is a great hair day.

XOXO,

Frenchie

BET Awards 2015: Fashion and Performance Highlights

Last night, many of you were entertained by the televised concert (because there were more performances than awards given) better known as, the BET Awards.  If not, don’t worry. We are here to give a brief recap and to also share some of the most fashionable moments both on and off the red carpet!

Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross were this year's hosts. They kept the crowd entertained with funny sketches, bizarre wardrobe changes and many celebrity impressions. Aside from their great chemistry, Ross looked stunning the entire night. Her fashion was just as equally impressive as her comedy. Anderson cleaned up pretty well too.

The show opened with Kendrick Lamar, performing "Alright" from his latest album, To Pimp a Butterfly. Lamar rapped on top of a graffiti covered police car with an American flag waving behind, and several dancers below dressed in all black. His performance was very uplifting, tributing the recent racial events in America, and was a perfect show opener.

Janelle Monae graced the stage next with her new single, "Yoga". New artist, Jidenna, later joined Monae on stage and performed his single, "Classic Man". Neither disappointed, but it was Jidenna who stole the show with his impeccably dressed dancers.

Other performers included: Chris Brown and Tyga, The Weeknd and Alicia Keys, Donnie McClurkin, Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj, Empire Cast, Anthony Hamilton and Gary Clark Jr., Big Sean and E-40, and Fetty Wap.

The tributes were also crowd pleasers. Bad Boy Entertainment surprised us all with a full on 90s flashback concert with 112, Faith Evans and even Lil Kim. Diddy, however, had a little too much fun, and had a slight mishap when he fell through a hole on stage that was used to bring a new artist from underground.

Tori Kelly amazed everyone with her pitch perfect pipes again during the Smokey Robinson tribute. She was joined by Robin Thicke and Ne-Yo.

Janet Jackson also received a tribute. Tinashe, Jason Derulo and Ciara all performed a few of Jackson's greatest hits. Jackson looked better than ever as she received her award and announced her music return and also her upcoming tour.

We were all surprised to see a performance by Tamar Braxton and K. Michelle, who recently ended an ugly feud. They stayed true to their word and looked as if they were truly over the drama. The two were later joined by the great Patti Labelle. Unfortunately, viewers were more interested in Braxton's makeup than her performance itself.

Aside from the entertaining performances, the red carpet was also filled with pleasing and not so pleasing appearances:

Karrueche

August Alsina

Gabrielle Union

Chris Brown

Michael B. Jordan

Justine Skye

Se7en Streeter and B.o.B

Cassie
Laverne Cox

Zendaya

Natalie La Rose and Flo Rida
